Description
As I stood at the altar in the quiet of the ancient Chiesa di Sant'Andrea (Church of St Andrew) in Orvieto Italy, gazing back at the small rose window, I could imagine dimly lit conclaves lit by smoky torches and robed church elders deciding the fate of the world. This church was an important part of the city’s life from early days and existed in its current form since the 12th century, before the famed Duomo cathedral. Pope Innocent III preached here in favor of the Crusades in 1216; Saint Peter Parenzo was canonized here in 1217 after being killed by the anti-papal heretics in 1199; Martin IV was crowned here in 1281, and Benedetto Caetani from Anagni, who later became Pope Boniface VIII, was named a Cardinal. Today the church sits at the heart of what remains of the medieval city, surrounded by cafes on the Piazza della Repubblica. Pope Innocent III preached in favour of the Crusades in 1216; Saint Peter Parenzo was canonized here in 1217 after being killed by the anti-papal heretics in 1199; Martin IV was crowned here in 1281 in the presence of Charles of Anjou, and Benedetto Caetani from Anagni, who later became Pope Boniface VIII, was named a Cardinal.
