Description
Sacre Coeur, a symbol of Montmartre and of Paris, sits atop the highest natural point in Paris. The inspiration for Sacre Coeur's design originated in 1870, the day of the proclamation of the Third Republic, when the defeat of French troops during the Franco-Prussian War was attributed to a divine punishment after ;a century of moral decline; since the French Revolution. Odd... since in Montmartre it sits amid a neighborhood with such a bohemian past! Getting there is half the battle. You have to avoid the scammers and ignore the massive crowds as you hike up the steps!
