Artist's Description

“I thirst !” (Sepia color pencil book illustration, 1985)
After this, Jesus knowing that all was now finished, said in fulfillment of the Scripture,
“I thirst !”
(From the 7 Last Words of Jesus on the Cross)

We all know that certain birds are used In Catholic and Scriptural symbolism; notably the dove, the swan, the raven, and I pulled the barn swallow from my own lexicon, because it’s such a beautiful bird and for me, since the bird is often symbolic of a soul, I thought how perfect for a symbol of the body or soul thirsting and yet the door is slammed shut.
Jesus saying, from Revelation 3: 20, “I stand at the door and knock …” is an invitation not a command. Many commentators say His words “I thirst !” refer also to His thirst for souls.
